Sony/ATV in India
Sony/ATV’s publishing rights company, which includes more than 750,000 songs by various artists worth over $1.5 billion, belong to Michael Jackson and Sony’s music company. Through a new contract with Sony in India, the company is entering that country’s emerging music market.
Under this agreement, Sony/ATV manages more than 2,000 Indian songs in the global market, and Sony India does the same for Western songs under the business name Sony/ATV India Publishing Rights in four countries: India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal.
Sony India described this business alliance as an excellent opportunity for Indian music and said that within three years, one-third of the music market will be at their disposal. It is said that over the next three to four years, India will become one of Sony/ATV’s most prominent music markets.
Sony/ATV was formed as a joint venture between Michael Jackson and Sony in 1995, and today it is one of the most powerful music publishing companies in the world. The company has 32 offices in 23 countries. 50% of this billion-dollar treasure—added to its value year after year—is in the hands of the Michael Jackson Foundation.
The rights to use and publish songs by The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Shakira, Eminem, Akon, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and many others are held by Sony/ATV. Michael’s songs also joined Sony/ATV earlier this year.
Regarding Michael’s songs, it should be noted that ownership of them is held by his Foundation, and Sony/ATV can only have input regarding the management of the use of these songs. The Foundation has said that ownership of Michael’s songs will never be transferred.
