On the first day of the trial of the doctor accused of Michael Jackson’s murder, the prosecutor displayed a photo and an audio recording of Michael in court, leaving the Jackson family, Michael’s fans, friends, acquaintances, and the general public in shock and disbelief. Nobody even imagined that such things could exist!
Although the prosecutor had previously said that a photo of Michael after his death would be shown in court, it doesn’t seem that the shock and torment from watching this heartbreaking photo and hearing that terrifying audio recording has left any of us for even a moment.
The audio recording is from May 10, 2009. From April 6, Murray had put Michael under treatment with his prescribed drug, propofol, for two months. According to the defense attorney, on June 23 Murray injected a smaller amount of this drug into Michael, and on June 24 there was no propofol injection. These two days are the same days, according to witnesses, when Michael appeared healthy and full of energy at rehearsal sessions.
In this audio recording as well, Michael is under the influence of the drugs his doctor injected into him. It is unclear why Murray recorded Michael’s voice speaking those words on his iPhone. Was he trying to have fun with it? Keep it as a souvenir and show it to his grandchildren? Extort Michael with it? Sell it on eBay? Or brag to his many girlfriends?
Some have described the prosecution’s decision to show these photos and audio recording in front of the family—and especially Michael’s mother—as a sign of their cold-heartedness and lack of concern for public feelings. But many others have considered this audio recording to be strong evidence against Conrad Murray.
What is clear is that on the first day of this trial, the prosecution managed to shock, break, and surprise all of us in the worst possible way. Some say Murray should have been tried not for involuntary manslaughter, but for intentional murder of Michael Jackson!
But what effect will this audio recording have on the course of the proceedings? The prosecution believes that if Murray recorded Michael’s voice after injecting him with the drug, it means he was aware of the effects those drugs would have on him and knew his physical condition well. But he neither cared nor sought help. Why?
