What’s Going On in Gary These Days? / Catherine and Joe Talk About Memories and Wishes

Yesterday, Catherine Jackson, in her hometown, during a press conference, referred to her son Michael as a “generous, joyful child who was born to make people happy.” She said:

“I remember Michael was a happy child, and he used to collect all his money and buy sweets and candies for all the children in the neighborhood.”

Joe Jackson also, as always, talked about his wishes and plans to set up entertainment and art centers in different parts of the world, including “Vietnam.”

Some time ago, city officials in Gary admitted that the program they are working on to build a cultural center for the Jacksons in this city is not going well. The issue is a lack of budget and too much taxation. This is a charitable project, and the respectable man who is handling it says he has kept his promise and rejects the officials’ claim that he is not a man of action. Simon Sahouri says: “This project will definitely be carried out. 100%.”

But what’s going on in Gary these days?

A festival has been set up in front of the Jacksons’ old house. Alongside the music group, the circus, singers, and dancers, the stalls of street vendors are also open and thriving.

A woman who came from Texas to take part in the celebration says she wrote a book about Michael called “America in the Mirror” (inspired by Michael Jackson’s song Man in the Mirror). She believes:

“America killed Michael with its insults.”

She continues that “there is still time for people to understand and grasp the incredible talent that was in Michael Jackson. And it’s very sad that we lost him before we could see his true talent.”

Another fan recalls the first time she fell in love with Michael: the MTV Awards ceremony in 2001—Michael’s joint performance with the band *NSYNC. She says:

“Michael came on stage and performed. I fell in love with him. I didn’t know what I would do if he wasn’t there! Now I’m one of his biggest fans.”

Gary will never forget Michael.

One street vendor says:

“The importance that Michael brought to the city and made it known. The attention that would be drawn toward Gary when he sang in this city... These are his legacies for the city.”
